SCORM viewer

SCORM viewer and player that runs without an LMS

Open a SCORM file online: drop in a SCORM 1.2 or 2004 .zip and it plays right here. The viewer reads the manifest, loads the course exactly as a learning platform would and shows you what the package is actually made of. Your file never leaves this tab.

How to open a SCORM file in three steps

Viewing a package is the easy part. The viewer does it in your browser so you can check a course before it goes near an LMS.

01

Drop your .zip

Any package exported as SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004, from Articulate Storyline, Rise, Adobe Captivate, iSpring or another authoring tool.

What is inside a SCORM package and how imsmanifest.xml works

SCORM is a packaging standard, not a file format. A .scorm file does not exist. What you export is a zip with a manifest at the top and a small website underneath.

imsmanifest.xml

The manifest, at the top level

Every SCORM package has one and it has to sit at the root of the zip rather than inside a folder. It declares the SCORM version, the course outline and which file to launch. If this file is missing or buried one folder down, an LMS will reject the package.

How this SCORM viewer plays a package without an upload

Most online SCORM viewers extract your package on a server. This one does the same work in the tab, which is why it can open a package you are not allowed to send anywhere.

  1. 01

    Unzipped in the tab

The browser reads the zip directly. There is no upload step, no queue and no copy of your package on a server, so you can open material that is under NDA or has not been cleared for release.

  2. 02

    Served from a real path

The extracted files are handed to a service worker that answers requests for them on this origin. The course then resolves its own stylesheets, scripts and media by relative path, exactly as it would when hosted.

  3. 03

Given a runtime to talk to

A SCORM course looks for an LMS API before it starts and often refuses to run without one. The viewer provides both the SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 interfaces, so the course launches and reports progress as usual.

  4. 04

Logged, so you can see the tracking

Every runtime call appears in the log, with the data model element and value. A course that completes without ever setting a completion status will not report progress to your LMS either and this is where you find that out.

Who opens SCORM files and why

Anyone who builds, buys or runs online courses ends up with a zip they need to check. This is the quick way to do it.

  • 01

    Instructional designers

Check an export from Storyline, Rise, Captivate or iSpring in seconds, before it goes to review.

  • 02

    QA and testers

Click through every item and watch the runtime log for the completion, score and bookmark calls.

  • 03

    LMS administrators

Work out whether a package is broken or the platform is, before you raise a ticket.

  • 04

    L&D and training teams

Preview a vendor course without asking IT for a test account on the learning platform.

SCORM viewer, SCORM player or LMS

The terms get used interchangeably. Here is how they differ, so you know which one a task actually needs.

  • This viewer

Opens a package so you can see how it is built and what the course reports back.

Use it to: Check a course before it ships.

  • A SCORM player

Plays a course for a learner, without the management features around it.

Use it to: Take or preview the course.

  • An LMS

Hosts courses, enrols learners and stores their results.

Use it to: Run training at scale.

Your course stays on your machine

The package is unpacked and served by your own browser and we never receive it. That makes it safe to open an unreleased course or one with confidential training content. Anything the course itself requests from the internet, such as a hosted video or font, still goes out the way it would on any LMS.

Why a SCORM package will not play

Most failures come from the course, not the viewer. These are the four that account for nearly every blank frame.

  • 01

    Flash content

Courses built around .swf files stopped running in every browser in 2020. The viewer cannot play them and neither can anything else.

  • 02

    Plain http resources

A course that loads images, video or fonts over http is blocked by the browser on a secure page. Re-export it with https links.

  • 03

    Needs a server

Some courses call back to a server for data or video. They load, then stall, because there is no server behind a preview.

  • 04

    Manifest problems

A missing or malformed imsmanifest.xml means there is nothing to launch. The viewer tells you so rather than showing a blank frame.

SCORM 1.2 vs SCORM 2004 and how to tell which one a package uses

The version decides which runtime calls a course makes and how much it can report back. The manifest declares it and the viewer reads it out for you.

  • SCORM 1.2

Still the most widely exported version

    window.API
    • Runtime methods are prefixed: LMSInitialize, LMSGetValue, LMSSetValue, LMSFinish.
    • One lesson status field covers both completion and pass or fail.
    • Suspend data is capped at 4,096 characters, which is what long courses run into first.
    • No sequencing rules, so the LMS or the course handles navigation itself.
  • SCORM 2004

4th Edition is the current release

    window.API_1484_11
    • Runtime methods drop the prefix: Initialize, GetValue, SetValue, Terminate.
    • Completion and success are separate fields, so a finished-but-failed attempt is expressible.
    • Suspend data grows to 64,000 characters.
    • Adds sequencing and navigation, which lets the package itself define prerequisites and rules.

SCORM course translation for Indian languages

A SCORM package is HTML underneath and HTML is a format Sarvam translates with the layout intact. That is the route from an English course to the same course in 22 Indian languages.

  • The course pages are HTML

HTML and XHTML are supported input formats for Sarvam’s Document Translation API and it preserves markup. A translated page keeps its structure, so the course still renders and its scripts still run.

  • Twelve languages per upload

One job can target up to 12 languages out of 23, English and 22 Indian. Each target comes back as its own file, so a course can be localised for several states from a single pass.

  • Terminology you control

Courseware lives or dies on consistent vocabulary. Set the academic genre and pass style guidelines so a term is translated the same way on page 4 and page 40, with per-language overrides where a state uses different wording.

  • Where a conversation helps

Repackaging a translated course, handling narration and on-screen text baked into video and keeping the manifest and tracking intact are integration work rather than a single API call. Tell us what your library looks like and we will be straight about what fits.

SCORM viewer FAQ

How do I open a SCORM file?

Drop the .zip onto the viewer above, or choose it with the file picker. The package opens in your browser and the course starts playing. You do not need an LMS, an account or any software and there is nothing to install.

How do I test a SCORM package without an LMS?

Drop the .zip onto this viewer. It plays the course in your browser and logs every SCORM call, so you can check completion, score and bookmarking without uploading the package to an LMS.

How do I open a SCORM file on Windows or Mac?

A SCORM file is a zip. Open this page in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari and drop the zip onto the viewer. There is nothing to install on Windows or Mac.

What is the difference between a SCORM viewer and a SCORM player?

The words overlap. A player runs a course for a learner. A viewer also lets you look at how the package is built and what the course reports back. This tool does both and it is not an LMS, so it does not store learner records or enforce sequencing rules.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no upload limit, because nothing is uploaded. The package is unpacked in your browser, so a very large course with long video depends on your device memory rather than on a cap we set.

Can I create SCORM packages here?

No. This tool opens and checks packages. You build them in an authoring tool such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, Adobe Captivate or iSpring, then drop the exported .zip here to test it.

Do I need an account to use this SCORM viewer?

No. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many packages you open. The viewer runs in your browser rather than on our servers.

Is my package uploaded anywhere?

No. The zip is read and extracted inside the browser tab. Nothing is sent to Sarvam or to any third party and closing the tab removes the package from memory. That is the point of building it this way: you can open material you are not permitted to upload.

Which SCORM versions are supported?

SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004, including the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Editions. The viewer reads the version your package declares in imsmanifest.xml and provides the matching runtime, so a course written for either one will launch.

What is a SCORM package?

A zip archive that follows the Shareable Content Object Reference Model, a standard for packaging e-learning so any compliant platform can play it and track it. Inside are an imsmanifest.xml describing the course and the HTML, CSS, JavaScript and media that make it up.

Why does my package fail to open?

Usually because there is no imsmanifest.xml in the zip at all, which means it was not exported as SCORM. If the manifest is simply one level down, because the course folder was zipped instead of its contents, this viewer still opens it, though a strict LMS will reject it and you should re-zip before uploading there. Password-protected archives, ZIP64 archives and damaged directories are reported by name.

The course opens but the screen is blank. Why?

Check the runtime log under the player. A course that is waiting on an LMS feature the viewer does not emulate, or that loads content from a server it expects to be on, will start but not render. The log shows which calls it made before it stopped.

Does this work with xAPI, cmi5 or AICC packages?

Not yet. The viewer reads SCORM packages, which are identified by an imsmanifest.xml. An xAPI or cmi5 package uses a different manifest and a different runtime and an AICC course ships course, descriptor and assignable-unit files instead.

Can a SCORM course be translated into Indian languages?

The pages inside a package are HTML and HTML is a supported input format for Sarvam’s Document Translation API, which preserves markup and layout. That covers the on-page text. Repackaging the translated course and handling narration or text baked into video, is integration work rather than one API call, so talk to us about the specific library.

Can I edit a package here?

No. This is a viewer: it opens, plays and inspects a package without changing it. Nothing is written back to your file.
